I'm not a big fan of period costume dramas now a days. I loved loved it when I was a child watching TVB martial art dramas. I think Chinese period costumes are much better than Korean ones.

The plot of this one attracted me and I'm a fan of Song Seung Hun and Park Min Young's. Great pairing and an appealing plot so I gave this one a go.

Jin Hyuk (Dr Jin)  is a very talented neurosurgeon. He sees his work as black and white. He will only perform a surgery if he knows that surgery will be 100% successful. He's not cold but he lacks compassion towards his patients. His girlfriend Mi Na is the opposite. Because of this trait, one day, they have an argument and Mi Na gets in to an accident and is comatised.

One day, Dr Jin performs an unusual surgery where he removes a fetus-shaped tumour from a patient's brain. This scene is very important and ties up the last scene in episode 22. On the rooftop, while he was taking a rest, he sees the patient who he had performed the surgery holding a number of things and wanting to jump down the high rise building. Dr Jin tries to stop him and ends up jumping accidentally.

When he lands, he is transported to 1860 Joseon Dynasty, right in the middle of a fight between the king's soldiers and some rebels. He is mistaken for one of them and flees to a nearby hill. There he slips and hangs on to a cliff for dear life.  Lee Ha Eung saves him.

Lee Ha Eung is the future king's father, later Dr Jin finds out as he is familiar with the history of that time. Later, he meets Young Rae, a young woman who looks identical to Mi Na. They open a clinic and help the poor and those were suffering requiring medical help.

The whole drama revolves around curing the sick and performing different surgeries on people. Dr Jin helps Ha Eung's son to become the future king of that period, to guide history to the path it should be so he can transport back to the 21st Century to get back to Mi Na. There are challenges because he does things that are not meant to happen at that time such as making penicillin, and as a consequence, history alters slightly.  He learns and grow compassion for his patients, and he had to be creative in his treatments because there were a lot of things that he needed but lacked due to that time period. Perhaps that was why he travelled to that time? So he could  develop in to a warm hearted and compassionate doctor?

Drama irks: Ha Eung's laugh. This guy laughs practically every second sentence, especially in the first half of the drama. A very loud and annoying laugh. The left minister's son. He was hopeless and his character was a hasty and unintelligent one. Kim Jaejoong's character as Kim Kyung Tak. His step father, the left minister used him and treated him like a servant/hitman, and yet he was still so loyal and faithful. Though, you have to be touched by Kyung Tak's loyalty because he loved his step father so much. The surgeries were a bit gruesome as it was quite explicit in showing blood, cutting, and sewing of bodily tissues.

The drawings on the penicillin flowchart looked too technical. Did Dr Jin really draw that? Also, the injection needles made seemed a bit too advanced using materials from that period. How did they manage to draw in the mm lines on it? Dr Jin's phone still had reception on it when he looked at his phone wallpaper of him and Mi Na. Phone reception during 1860!?

The last episode, it turns out the person who wanted to jump that Dr Jin was trying to save was actually himself. He must have travelled there and back, stole some stuff he knew he'd  need for that period to go back to save Young Rae, and therefore Mi Na because it was believed that the life line in that time, is aligned with the life line of his current time.

I didn't particularly like the OST of this one much but two songs were ok: Will You Come by Zia; The Road of Tears 눈물길 by 2AM’s Changmin & Seulong.

A nice happy ending. I liked that. You won't see Song Seung Hun's abs here if you've seen him in other dramas such as My Princess where he comes out of the shower and you get to see him topless ^^

Rating: 2.8/5
